We get to play again! AT MIEGE

Game 7: (3-3-1)
24 September 2024 at Bishop Miege at 6:30 (1-1, 2OT's)

Last Match at Miege against the Huppes

You might notice the starting lineup highlights a new injury: goalie Parker Lehn, who was hurt in the BV Southwest match. We welcomed Hank to the starting line-up and Greyson's return.

Brody moved wide, and Omar took over the "9" spot as we hoped to remind everyone of our former selves tonight.

It was quite a match. We got off to a slow start, giving up three corners in the first five minutes, and they scored on the second one.

It was a bit disappointing as it is the same 2-man variation that we run with a pass to the player at the top of the 18 for a shorter cross. We usually have a man mark that position—not sure why we did not mark here.

We still were not great for the next 15 minutes, but we had a 45-minute lightning break, which helped. We met, talked about some things, and came back out to play some very nice and tough soccer.

Towards the end of the second half, we struck three straight shots on goal. The first two were saved, but Brody scored on the third one.

We opened the second half, holding possession as we racked up deadball opportunity after deadball opportunity, virtually all throw-ins or long free kicks. We, however, did not generate a corner all night.

We had a throw-in with about 25 minutes left in the match. Miege cleared it several times as we put the ball back on. Unfortunately, our last back-on was not high enough to clear their defense, creating a one-touch counter that led to a breakaway. Hank came out trying to take away the angle but caught a piece of him outside the 18-box.

So there it was, another red card. (Here is the sequence: Check it out. He looks offside but is on his own half when the ball is played.)

Parker put his stuff on without anyone saying anything to him, knowing he could not really punt a ball. He went in, stopped the direct kick, and earned a clean sheet the rest of the way. Gutsy.

Yes, we played in our now famous 4-2-3-0 for 45 minutes, holding them to nothing. We even scored once, but were called for running into the goalie. It was a good call.

If you know soccer, you know what the boys accomplished tonight. It took enormous discipline and even more heart to hold Miege without a goal for that long.

We got a big-time game from sophomore Michael Doerfler. He played wingback. He played defensive midfield. He played wing forward. He just played.

Our backline played remarkably well, and we lost Noah early in the second half. So sophomores Grady Richlin and Michael Doerfler took all his minutes in the second half and overtimes.

Kitts, Rutter, and Miles were in beast mode all night as service after service got played into the front third. They shut everything down.

But Brody's almost 100 minutes at wing forward (he played defense up and down the field, and he scored our only goal) and Spencer Ragan's 100 minutes at the "10," earned those two MOM.

We are back in play on Thursday at ODAC against Olathe South.
